Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: All consecutive surgical patients with sepsis and septic shock due to sepsis criteria admitted to the surgical intensive care unit.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. patients that refused to study 2. patients that had pre-existing systemic disease 3. patients that were significantly limiting life expectancy 4. patients that were transferred to tertiary care hospital 5. patients that were intolerance to protocol
