Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Age 40 years or more, 2. Confirmed diagnosis of COPD defined by post bronchodilator FEV1/FVC less than 0.7 within the preceding 12 months, 3. Post-bronchodilator FEV1 30 to 80% predicted, 4. Hospitalized with moderate-to-severe COPD exacerbation

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Respiratory rate 30 breaths/min or more, 2. Oxygen saturation less than 92% while receiving at least 5 L/min oxygen via nasal cannula, 3. Hemodynamic instability, 4. Altered level of consciousness, 5. Requirement for non-invasive ventilation, high-flow oxygen therapy, or invasive mechanical ventilation, 6. History of cardiothoracic surgery, 7. Neuromuscular disease affecting the diaphragm or intercostal muscles
