Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Patients undergoing their first lung surgery via either open thoracotomy or video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). 2. No prior history of chronic respiratory diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, or general allergic conditions. 3. No reported history of essential oil allergies in either the patient or their caregiver (as they shared the same hospital room during the intervention). 4. No history of olfactory dysfunction or impaired sense of smell. 5. Absence of adverse reactions such as nausea, dizziness, or headache, and allergic symptoms such as skin rash, itching, or difficulty breathing in both the patient (intervention group) and the caregiver after a 20-minute pre-test. This procedure involved inhaling the preferred essential oil of the patient via a diffuser. 6. Normal hearing function with no history of hearing impairment or reliance on hearing aids. 7. Ability to communicate fluently and understand the Thai language.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Development of significant postoperative complications, such as acute hemorrhage (bleeding) or atrial fibrillation (AF). 2. Emergence of acute respiratory symptoms, including dyspnea (shortness of breath) or the presence of abnormal breath sounds such as wheezing or stridor. 3. Development of postoperative delirium or acute confusion following the surgical procedure. 4. Occurrence of adverse reactions or allergic symptoms during the aromatherapy session, specifically: Adverse reactions: Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or headache. Allergic manifestations: Skin rash, itching, or difficulty breathing.
