Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. patients diagnosed advanced chronic liver disease by imaging (ultrasonography, computer tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging), or liver biopsy or liver stiffness of at least 15 kPa 2. patients performed or planned to perform EGD within 4 months

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. denied to perform EGD or SSM 2. history of splenectomy or congenital asplenia 3. non-cirrhotic portal hypertension 4. portal vein thrombosis or history of splenic vein embolization 5. history of esophageal varices rubber band ligation or gastric varices glue injection within 1 year prior to inclusion 6. presence of ascites 7. acute on chronic liver failure 8. HCC without treatment or with treatment other than surgical resection 9. BMI equal or more than 35 kg/sq.m.
