Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The inclusion criteria consisted of 1. Patients aged over 40 years with degenerative cataract (senile cataract or age-related cataract), 2. Absence of corneal pathology, 3. No other causes of reduced vision, 4. No history of previous ophthalmic surgery, 5. Preoperative corneal endothelial cell count greater than 1,500 cells per square millimeter, 6. No intraoperative complications and no retained cortical material postoperatively, 7. Ability to attend regular postoperative follow-up visits

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The exclusion criteria were: 1. History of allergy to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics, 2. Axial length less than 22 mm or greater than 25 mm, due to potential differences in anterior chamber depth compared with emmetropic eyes

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Corneal endothelial cell density change after cataract surgery Change in corneal endothelial cell density at 3 months postoperatively Corneal endothelial cell density Measured as cells per mm2 using non contact specular microscopy

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Coefficient of variation of corneal endothelial cells 3 months Measured using non contact specular microscopy,Endothelial cell hexagonality 3 months Measured as percentage using non contact specular microscopy,Anterior chamber cell count 3 months Measured by slit lamp examination,Corneal edema 3 months Assessed by slit lamp examination
