Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: patients presenting with acute upper airway obstruction underwent urgent tracheostomy in ENT surgical unit during 10 year period 1. signs and symptoms of acute upper airway obstuction included 1.1 loss of voice or hoarseness 1.2 difficulty breathing 1.3shortness of breath at rest or on exertion 1.4stridor, abnormal respiratory rate, nasal flaring 1.5 use of accessory respiratory muscles 2. preoperative 48-hour serum sodium blood test

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1.incomplete medical records 2. pre-existing hyponatremia requiring chronic management 3. elective tracheostomy 4.absence of endotracheal intubation or percutaneous tracheostomy 5.conversion tracheostomy from prior cricothyroidotomy before entering the operating room 6.history of chronic hyponatremia.
