Interventions

Patients who identify alcohol as their main problem and meet current clinical criteria for AUD using DSM-5 (First 2013). Last drink must be within 7 days of entry the study.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Diagnosis for AUD, determined by using DSM-5 criteria and diagnosed by two doctors during the first 24 hours of admission. 2. Age range 18 to 65 years. 3. Engaged in the abstinence-based alcohol treatment program in the subacute inpatient unit. 4. Last drink must be within 7 days of entry the study. 5. Provide written informed consent to participate. 6. Proficiency in German.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Current psychosis (incl. schizophrenia). 2. Progressive or unstable physical illnesses (e.g. decompensated heart disease, decompensated liver disease, decompensated kidney disease, etc.). 3. Terminal or progressive physical illness (e.g. cancer). 4. Seizure disorder (except seizures related to alcohol withdrawal). 5. Degenerative central nervous system diseases (e.g., dementia, Parkinson disease, multiple sclerosis, central pontine myelinolysis, etc.). 6. Personality disorders only if they are severe (e.g. personality traits that are judged by the researchers to interfere with the study procedures). 7. Acute suicidality. 8. Diagnosed untreated sleep apnea. 9. Other moderate-to-severe substance use disorders (e.g., opioid, cocaine, sedative, etc.) or patients on maintenance therapy with opioids or benzodiazepines are excluded. Patients with mild substance use disorders in the past 30 days (i.e., harmful use of a substance without physical dependence) may be included. In addition, a previous history of a moderate-to-severe substance use disorder, in early remission (past 3 months), does not exclude a patient. 10. Self-reported pregnancy or breastfeeding. 11. Patients unlikely to fully cooperate in the study. 12. Patients currently enrolled in another research study.
