Conditions

72 patients who had been clinically diagnosed with obesity based on standard criteria accepted in Chinese and Western medicine. The 72 patients were randomly divided into two groups: either the Shu-mu points acupuncture group or Shu-mu points catgut embedding group. Treatment was continuously for 2 months, and treated was considered to be completed only if patients attended all the sessions and two groups were evaluated for efficacy after finished the treatment. Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: clinical diagnosis of simple obesity, BMI 25 kgm , Waist circumference 90 cm in males, Waist circumference 85 cm in females, age range between 18 and 50 years, and no other weight loss treatment one month before and during acupoint catgut embedding.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: those with other diseases that affect body weight and interfere with absorption, metabolism, and excretion; participants with secondary obesity; those with coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, and other serious cardiovascular diseases; pregnant and lactating women; and those who were planning to become pregnant within 40 weeks
