Conditions

Interventions

The target population will consist of IBS-C patients with moderate-to-severe bloating, as defined by Rome III criteria and a bloating severity score of 3 or more on a 7-point Likert scale. The Rome II

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: I. IBS-C patients with moderate-to-severe bloating 1. A diagnosis of IBS is based on Rome III criteria which requires: Recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort at least 3 days per month on the last 3 months associated with two or more of the following criteria: + Related to defecation + Associated with a change in frequency of stool + Associated with a change in form (appearance) of stool Criteria fulfilled for the last 3 months with symptom onset at least 6 months prior to diagnosis. 2. If patients aged more than 45 year, colonoscopic examination within the previous 5 years must be included. 3. The diagnosis of IBS-C is made when patients report that at least 25% of bowel movements with Bristol Stool type 6 or 7 and less than 25% of bowel movements with Bristol Stool type 1 or 2. 4. Eligible IBS-C patients rated the average daily amount of bloating as a score of 3 or more on a 7-point Likert scoring (with 0 indicating not at all; 1, hardly; 2, somewhat; 3, moderately; 4, a good deal; 5, a great deal; and 6, a very great deal) over the course of at least 7 days. II. Healthy control: Partners or healthy relatives of patients visiting the clinic and healthy patients who come to check up their health will be included if they do not exhibit functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) as assessed by the Thai language version of the FGID checklist within the last 3 months.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: For both groups: 1. Mechanical bowel preparation conducted within 14 days preceding VOCs measurement. 2. Antibiotics, probiotics administration (3 days or more) within one months prior to VOCs assessment. 3. Current smokers or former smokers who have recently quit within the last 12 weeks. 4. Excessive alcohol consumption (women consumed more than 2 drinks per sitting per day or more than 7 drinks per week and men consumed more than 4 drinks per sitting per day or more than 14 drinks per week) 5. Diabetes, hypothyroidism. 6. Lung cancer, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Asthma, Tuberculosis. 7. Cirrhosis, Hepatocellular carcinoma. 8. Chronic kidney disease. 9. Having any active cancers.
