Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: patients aged 18 years old or older who were present to the emergency department and undergo diagnostic evaluation using computed tomography (CT) imaging of the cervical region
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. if they had been diagnosed with spinal or spinal cord injury in the cervical region, as determined by the emergency medicine resident on duty 2. if they had undergone endotracheal intubation via the nasal or oral route 3. if they had been given a nasogastric or orogastric feeding tube 4. if they had a mass lesion in the anterior cervical vertebral region 5. if they had a history of prior radiation therapy to the cervical area 6. if they had a history of surgery involving the larynx, esophagus, or thyroid 7. if they had a known allergy to ultrasound gel 8. if they were unable to understand or communicate in Thai 9. if they were in cardiac arrest
