Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: All patients aged over 18 years who were admitted to ICU and submitted to IMV through an endotracheal tube for more than 24 hours were eligible for inclusion.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients likely to require tracheostomy, having accidental extubation or self-extubation, and not meet- ing the eligibility criteria for extubation were excluded.
