Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Age of 18 years old and older and diagnosis of moderate or severe ARDS according to the BERLIN criteria

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: contraindications for recruitment maneuver (RM), esophageal balloon catheter insertion, and applying the EIT, namely, the presence of one of the following conditions: 1) increase intracranial pressure; 2) profound hypotension; 3) pneumothorax; 4) lung bullae; 5) GI bleeding; 6) chest wall trauma; or 7) on a pacemaker.
