Conditions

Active smoker among newly diagnosed tuberculosis patients smoking cessation, tuberculosis, directly observed treatment short-course (DOTS)

Interventions

Daily brief advice on smoking cessation given at least 2 times per week by the TB-DOTS nurses during TB-DOTS therapy for six months of TB treatment programme,Control group received standard usual care

18 Years to 70 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: i) Malaysian citizen ii) Individual aged 18 years old and above iii) Individual who smoke from legally marketed cigarette pack and diagnosed with active pulmonary TB: either sputum smear-positive or smear-negative, based on classification from Malaysian or WHO treatment guidelines iv) Individual who are classified under treatment Category I (new TB cases) v) Had not received any smoking cessation treatment or intervention before this study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: i) Individual who have extra-pulmonary TB only (involving CNS, pericardium, adrenal etc) ii) Individual who have multi-drug resistant tuberculosis at diagnosis, iii) Individual who are living with or newly diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, iv) Individual who are classified as Category II (relapse, treatment failure, and treatment after default) or Category III (chronic TB) v) Individual who fulfilled the eligibility criteria, but unwilling to participate in the study
