Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: (1) Beta-thalassemia/Hb E (2) Hemoglobin concentration 5-9 g/dl and serum ferritin level >= 600 ng/ml

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: (1) Lactation or pregnancy (2) Receiving blood transfusion within three months prior to the enrollment (3) Receiving medications for thalassemia apart from folic acid during one month before the enrollment
