Interventions

Herbal compress ball was prepared by Pharmaceutical Department&#44
HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sririndhorn Medical Center with good manufacturing practice. Herbal compress ball weighed 250 g and contained dried herbs including Zingiber cassumunar Roxb. rhizomes (90.5 g)
Curcuma longa L. rhizomes (18.2 g)&#44
Cymbopogon citratus. (DC) Stapf leaves and leaf sheaths (18.2 g)&#44
Acacia concinna (Willd.) DC. leaves (18.2 g)&#44
Tamarindus indica L. leaves (54.3 g)&#44
Citrus hystrix DC. peels (36.2 g)&#44
Blumea balsamifera (L.) DC. leaves (5.4 g)&#44
salt (3.6 g)&#44
and camphor (5.4 g). Before providing treatment&#44
two herbal balls were steamed in a stacked steamer pot for twenty minutes. Afterwards&#44
the first herbal ball was wrapped with towel to protect mother’s skin from a burn due to excessive heat&#44
and then the nurse gently touched and rolled the herbal ball on the breast except nipple and areola area. The contact time for each point was approximately ten seconds. Then&#44
the towel was unwrapped when the herbal ball was warm enough to put directly on mother’s body. Th second herbal ball was replaced when the first one was slightly lukewarm. The two herbal balls were
small towels were prepared and packed like herbal balls. Two ball&#45
like towels were steamed in a stacked steamer pot for twenty minutes. Afterwards&#44
the first towel ball was wrapped with towel to protect mother’s skin from a burn due to excessive heat&#44

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The postpartum women who had deliveries without complications (i.e. multiple pregnancies, preeclampsia, antepartum hemorrhage and preterm labor) and who had grade 3 and 4 breast engorgement were recruited. Mothers had not to been given any analgesic or NSAID drug before breast engorgement treatment, 6 hours at least. Their infants had birth weights of more than 2500 grams and were born without complications. The mothers had suffered no acute postpartum hemorrhages and had no contraindications to breastfeeding.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The mothers whose infants were diagnosed with galactosemia were excluded from this study.
