Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Patients undergoing total hip or knee replacement. American Society of Anesthesiologists classification 1 to 3. Body mass index between 18 and 35.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: - pre-existing neuropathy or coagulopathy - renal failure or hepatic failure - allergy to local anesthetics - pregnancy - prior surgery in the area of the lumbar spine - chronic pain syndromes requiring opioid intake at home
