Conditions

type 2 Diabetes mellitus (DM) patients were screened. Among the type 2 DM patients&#44

Interventions

The study was performed according to a split&#45
mouth design&#44
and each patient was included in a clinical protocol consisting of two different modalities: teeth were treated by SRP alone (control site) and by LLLT§ followed by SRP (test site). Two quadrants wer
hard&#44
and smooth.Laser therapy was performed three times at the test sites&#44
on days 1&#44
and 7 after treatment using a gallium aluminum arsenide (GaAlAs) diode laser. The physical parameters of the unit were wavelength = 808 nm&#44
average output = 0.3 W&#44
spot size = 0.28 cm2&#44
and continuous wave output. A non&#45
contact technique was applied for 10 s to the gingiva of the incisors and premolars and for 20 s to the gingiva of the molars. The application distance was 0.5–1 cm
this variation in distance did not affect the spot size with the hand piece used. The energy density was 4 J/cm2.,teeth were treated by SRP alone (control site) SRP (test site). Two quadrants were ran
and smooth.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Among the type 2 DM patients, patients with moderate to severe chronic periodontitis, were selected for the study29, and periodontal disease severity was defined according to Page and Eke.30 Moderate periodontitis was defined as two or more interproximal sites, not on the same tooth, with CAL >4 mm or two or more interproximal sites, not on the same tooth, with PD >5 mm. Severe periodontitis was defined two or more interproximal sites with CAL ≥6 mm, not on the same tooth, and one or more interproximal sites with PD ≥5 mm.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria were any kind of periodontal treatment during the last 6 months or use of antibiotics during the last 3 months, acute oral or systemic infection, periodontal abscess, hemorrhagic disorders, autoimmune diseases, pregnancy, or <15 teeth and partial dentures. Teeth with a mobility grade of III or pockets deeper than 10 mm in the studied areas were not evaluated.

Design outcomes

Primary
