Body composition in COPD patients. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease fat free mass index body mass index quality of life correlation

Interventions

The BMI was calculated as weight/height squared. Fat&#45
free mass (FFM) was measured by BIA using the body composition analyzer foot&#45
foot system (The Tanita SC&#45
330P&#44
Corporation of America Inc.&#44
Arlington Heights
United States). The Tanita BIA system provides a valid measure of percent body fat in older adults&#44
and could be a convenient and practical approach for assessment in public health settings. Subjects were measured standing erect with bare feet on the analyzer footpads. FFM was standardized for heigh
offs used for low BMI (&#8804
18.5 kg/m2) and low FFMI (&#8804
16 kg/m2 in men and &#8804
15 kg/m2 in women).15 Normal or altered body composition were defined in 4 categories
normal body composition: [BMI >18.5 and FFMI 16 (men) or >15 (women)]&#44
semistarvation: [BMI &#8804
18.5 and FFMI >16 (men) or >15 (women)]&#44
muscle atrophy/sarcopenia [BMI >18.5 and FFMI &#8804
16 (men) or &#8804
15 (women)]&#44

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients meeting any of the following criteria were excluded; current diagnosis of asthma, current active respiratory disorders other than COPD, e.g. lung cancer, tuberculosis or other significant chest x-rays findings not associated with COPD (documented within 1 year). Those with specific disease states; insulin dependent diabetes, and renal failure as well as those with clinically apparent heart failure were also excluded.
