Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Residents of Manizales, Colombia; aged over 50 years; diagnosis of Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (GOLD I-IV) confirmed by spirometry; evidence of a Forced Expiratory Volume in the first second (FEV1) / Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) ratio less than 70

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Diagnosis of known respiratory disorders other than Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD); history of significant inflammatory disease; malignancy; coronary disease; carrier of osteosynthetic material; partial or total limb amputation; neuromuscular, orthopedic and/or medical disease that impedes or physical exercise; CPOD exacerbation in the four weeks prior to inclusion; recent surgery and participation in pulmonary rehabilitation programs or physical exercises in the last year

Expected effect 1. An improvement in muscle function in COPD patients was expected to be found with an increase in meters walked, verified from the 6-minute walk test, based on the minimal clinically significant difference of at least least 25 meters comparing the initial assessment and at 12 weeks of follow-up;Effect found 1. An improvement in muscle function and a statistically significant difference (p=0.004) were observed when comparing the differences after the intervention between the experimental and control groups in the 6-minute walk. In addition, an average difference of 52 meters was achieved, when evaluating the 6-minute walk, between the pre- and post-intervention periods;Expected effect 2. It was expected to find an improvement in muscle function in COPD patients with a decrease in the time spent, verified with the gait speed test, based on the minimum clinically significant difference of at least 0.1 m/sec comparing the initial assessment and at 12 weeks of follow-up;Effect found 2. An improvement in muscle function was observed, reflected in the decrease in the time spent in the gait speed test when comparing the differences after the intervention between the experimental and control groups, obtaining an improvement of 0.2 m/sec

It was expected to find an improvement in the quality of life of patients with COPD, verified by applying the St. George quality of life questionnaire, based on the minimum clinically significant difference of at least 4 units after the application of a 12-week physical training intervention in patients with COPD;Effect found 4.
