Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Age equal to or over 18 years old; gingival bleeding within ten seconds after removing the probe from the gingival sulcus; presence of dental biofilm; tooth loss due to extraction for orthodontic treatment; both sexes

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Smokers; alcoholics; diabetes mellitus; allergic to one of the study substances; use of orthodontic appliances; use of mouthwash or antimicrobial substance for at least two weeks before the start of the study

Expected Outcome 1: The expected outcome of this study was to demonstrate the superior efficacy of Group 2 (Tea Tree Oil) compared to Group 1 (Chlorhexidine Digluconate). It was anticipated that the essential oil would achieve an 80% microbiota control rate, whereas chlorhexidine was expected to show an estimated efficacy of 30% in the susceptibility test;Observed outcome 1: The outcome demonstrated that tea tree oil was effective in controlling the oral microbiota, showing a reduction in the total colony-forming unit count between the beginning and the end of the study at 21 days. However, this efficacy was comparable to that of chlorhexidine, and the 80% superiority initially predicted in the study design was not achieved
