Interventions

Group of 14 participants evaluated in three moments, with interval of one week between the interventions: 1) Fasting blood collection and ingestion of 400 mL of orange juice
Blood collection 1h later 2) Fasting blood collection and ingestion of 400 mL of moro red orange juice
Bood collection 1h later 3) Fasting blood collection and ingestion of 400 mL control (water with maltodextrin 100g/L)

Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Age above 60 years old; clinical stability characterized by the absence of exacerbation in the last three months and regular use of medication including long-term home oxygen therapy.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Use of antioxidant supplements; use of systemic corticosteroids in the last three months; the presence of other respiratory diseases; diagnose of other NCDs such as diabetes mellitus II, cancer, severe heart failure, kidney or liver; patients with more than 15% or 200 mL increase in FEV1 after bronchodilator administration.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Reduction of 10% in IL-6 and TNF-a blood levels after orange juices intake.;Determination of blood cytokines IL-6 e TNF-a by ELISA.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Diminished expression of metalloproteases 2 and 9 in comparison to baseline (0h)after orange juices intake. Blood count. Change in the global expression of microRNAs after orange juices intake.;Metalloproteases 2 and 9 evaluation by zomography (images). Leucocytes evaluationby blood cell count. MicroRNAs evaluation by PCR.
