Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: postmenopausal woman; present non specific chronic low back pain; low back pain for more than three months; no history of engagement in physical exercise during the previous three months

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: be on hormone replacement therapy or analgesics; practice other types of exercises or treatments during the experiment

To analyze the effects of the Pilates method on biochemical markers, pain perception, low back functional disability, kinesiophobia and muscle strength in postmenopausal women with chronic low back pain. For pain, a visual analogue scale (VAS) was used, and for disability, the Roland-Morris/Brazil questionnaire (RMQD). Abdominal and lumbar strength were analyzed by an isometric test. Baseline serum levels of biochemical markers were evaluated in a clinical analysis laboratory. The chemiluminescence method was applied to analyze the levels of estradiol, IGF-1, IGFBP-3, and cortisol. CK was analyzed using the enzymatic method (PARDINI, 2015). After the interventions, both groups had lower levels of pain perception (PG, p<0.001; PAG, p=0.002) and low back functional disability (PG, p=0.001; PAG, p=0.005) and increased lumbar strength (PG and PAG, p=0.006). In PAG, there were increases in IGF-1 (p=0.007), IGFBP-3 (p=0.037), IGF-1/IGFBP-3 ratio (p=0.002), and abdominal strength (p=0.034), and reduction in CK (p=0.004) at the end of the training period. There was an increase in the IGF-1/IGFBP-3 ratio (p=0.045) and a reduction in CK levels (p=0.039) in PAG when compared to PG in the post-test. No significant differences were found in kinesiophobia and serum cortisol levels in intra and intergroup comparisons after the interventions.
