Alcohol drinking

Interventions

This is a randomized, controlled, open-label, parallel-group, multicenter clinical trial. A total of 242 older adults aged 60 years or older who present risky alcohol consumption, as defined by the AU

4) reflection
5) norm-setting
6) goal-setting
and 7) skill-building. This intervention will be delivered in a single individual session by Community Health Agents (CHAs), who will be previously trained through a standardized theoretical and pract
however, outcome assessors will remain blinded to group allocation.

Age
60 Years to No maximum

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Above 60 years; both genders; registered at Primary Care Units of São José dos Campos city; consumption of 7 drinks or more per week

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Participants that received treatment for problems related to drug use, except tobacco use, in the last 90 days; severe mental and physical illness that may impair data collection regarding alcohol consumption; patients that need emergency medical treatment or hospitalization; patients who are unable to communicate clearly and/or who are intoxicated at the time of screening

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Evaluate the alcohol consumption by the AUDIT-C (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test - Consumption) identifying at-risk drinkers (AUDIT-C score = 4).

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Evaluate the alcohol consumption in a typical week in the last 30 days (in units per week).;Evaluate cognitive performance by 10-CS (Ten-Word List for Cognitive Screening).;Evaluate physical activity through questions on frequency and quantity.;Evaluate the quality of life by CASP-16 (Control, Autonomy, Self-realisation and Pleasure);Evaluate depression by PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9);Evaluate the problems related alcohol consumption by the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT).;Evaluate the service use by service use questionnaire.
