Intensive Care Units

Interventions

Sixty volunteers admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) will participate in the study and will be equally allocated into two groups: effective photobiomodulation by light-emitting diodes (LEDs)
and placebo photobiomodulation by LEDs. Patients will be treated with photobiomodulation every day, once a day, until discharge from the ICU, determined by an independent medical staff. Photobiomodula

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Adults (higher than 18 years old) hospitalized in intensive care unit (ICU) of a philanthropic hospital due to postoperative cardiac surgery or acute respiratory failure

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients with plegia, paresis, amputation or congenital deformities in at least one limb, and patients with data insufficiently described in their hospital chart

Primary

Reduction of intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay by at least 10%, measured in hours of stay in ICU

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Highest degree of muscle strength at discharge from the intensive care unit of at least 10%, measured by handgrip dynamometry in kilogram-force (kgf);Highest degree of muscle strength at discharge from the intensive care unit of at least 5 points, measured by Medical Resource Council scale (MRC) ranging from 0 to 60 points;Highest functionality degree at discharge from the intensive care unit by at least 5 points, measured by Intensive Care Unit Mobility Scale (IMS) ranging from 0 to 10 points
