Interventions

This is a two-arm randomized controlled clinical trial single-blind with blinding of the data evaluator. Participants were randomly allocated by drawing lots. Intervention group: 7 participants with P
s disease will receive a single 20-minute session of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) composed of weight-bearing exercises in an orthostatic position with emphasis on the most affected
s disease will perform the same exercises as the intervention group however without the application of the proprioceptive feedback characteristic of the PNF concept (SHAM condition)

Eligibility

Age
55 Years to 90 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Men and women aged between 55 and 90 years; diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson’s disease by a neurologist; onset of motor symptoms for at least three years; use of levodopa in at least three daily doses, with or without other antiparkinsonian medications; Hoehn and Yahr stages between 1 and 4; ability to stand and walk; negative responses to all items of the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q)

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Clinical contraindication to physical exercise; uncontrolled hypertension or hypotension; inability to walk independently; myocardial infarction within the last 12 months; disabling sequelae of stroke; history of brain surgery; use of deep brain stimulation; presence of orthopedic prostheses limiting test performance; diabetic peripheral neuropathy; difficulty understanding or inability to follow simple commands

Primary

MeasureTime frame
It's expected to observe postural balance changes assessed through center of pressure variables obtained from a force platform (displacement amplitude and velocity) during standing task, comparing pre- and post-intervention moments in individuals with Parkinson's disease in the OFF medication state

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
It's expected to observe electromyographic activity changes of lower limb muscles assessed through surface electromyography (signal amplitude and activation timing) during standing and gait initiation tasks, comparing pre- and post-intervention moments; it's expected to find changes in anticipatory postural adjustments parameters obtained from electromyographic and force platform variables; it's expected to find changes in kinematic and spatiotemporal variables of gait initiation assessed by accelerometry (reaction time, execution time, and displacement)
