Eligibility

Age
60 Years to No maximum

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Men and women over 60 years of age who do not exercise regularly - frequency less than 3 times a week (Blackburn et al, 2006), with a diagnosis of knee OA; Signs of OA in at least one of the knee joint compartments (tibiofemoral and / or patellofemoral joint) (Brenner et al., 2003; Hortobágyi et al., 2004); Grade 2 or 3 on radiographic examination, according to Kellgren & Lawrence criteria, and present a minimum score of 4 cm in VAS confirmed by a medical professional; Not having undergone physiotherapeutic treatment in the 3 months prior to the research project; No infiltration with corticosteroid in the knee (previous 6 months); Bennell et al., 2003); In addition, a lack of medical restriction that impossibilitate to participate in the proposed evaluations (cardiorespiratory, neurological and / or musculoskeletal changes) and previous knee or hip surgeries.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Obtain a score of less than 18 points in the Mini- Mental State Examination in the case of illiterate elders and less than 24 for the school-aged elderly (Lourenço; Veras, 2006); Get scores greater than 10 on the EDG-30 Geriatric Depression Scale (Almeida and Almeida, 1999; Stoppe Júnior et al., 1994); Have a total absence of more than 25% of the total number of sessions;

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Pain reduction, evaluated using the visual analogic scale of at least 40% on the first and last day of treatment;Improvement in function, as measured by the increase in total score obtained in the Western and Ontario McMaster universities osteoarthitis index (WOMAC) questionnaire in the domains of pain, function and stiffness on the first and last day of treatment;The increase in pressure pain threshold, measured by algometry (kilograms / force) measured on the first and last day of treatment

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
The increase in distance walked during the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) measured in meters on the first and last day of treatment;The decrease in the time taken to perform the 40m (4x10m) rapid walk test in seconds measured on the first and last day of treatment;The decrease in the time taken to perform the Stair test in seconds measured on the first and last day of treatment;The increase in the number of times the subject sat on the sit-up and chair lift test in 30 seconds assessed on the first and last day of treatment ;The decrease in the time used to perform the TUG (Timed up and go test) in seconds evaluated on the first and last day of treatment ;The decrease in knee temperature in degrees (º), evaluated by thermographic camera on the first and last day of treatment ;The reduction of Static and Dynamic Balance instability values, evaluated through the Biodex Balance System by the Falls Risk protocol evaluated on the first and last day of treatment
