Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
It is expected that after the intervention patients have good level of empowerment and satisfactory practice of self-care actions. In addition, it is expected to know which sociodemographic characteristics can influence the level of empowerment, and the glycohemoglobin rate also plays a role. The level of empowerment was assessed by the Diabetes Empowerment Scale instrument with 28 questions divided into 3 subscales and maximum score of 5 points. The practice of self-care associated with diet and physical activity was assessed using the Self-management tool for Diabetes Care in eight closed questions, has a total score of eight points and, to a satisfactory result, you must obtain a minimum score of 5, 0 points, glycohemoglobin examination was performed before the start of the intervention.;Patients in the intervention group (IG) showed better overall empowerment scores compared to the control group (CG) (3.92 ± 0.41 and 3.76 ± GI 0.43 in GC) and likewise the subscales I (4.00 ± 0.43 and 3.79 ± GI 0.57 in GC) and III (3.94 ± 0.48 and 3.80 ± GI 0.54 in GC), with p <0, 05. Within the Group Intervention patients of female sex, inactive and the literate are more empowered, with p <0.05. Patients in both groups had similar characteristics during the study period, considering the sociodemographic variables, except for school, for which GI presented a higher percentage of illiterate (20.8% in GI and 2.7% in GC). Regarding glycohemoglobin clinical variable, there was a higher percentage of patients with a level below 8% (73.7% in GI and 54.8% in the GC). Another difference between the groups is given in the self-care questionnaire score, which occurs in the GI a significantly higher percentage of patients with 5 or more points (77.5% in GI and 44.2% in the GC).

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
There have been four education sessions-based group in the empowerment approach, which is an innovative approach to health education in diabetes. It was hoped that this intervention, patient-centered, was satisfactory to them and had good adhesion.;It was observed that patients were interested in the experiences shared in the group and to know more stories of difficulties in dealing with diabetes and achieve self-care goals. Facilitators techniques employed in the groups proved to be effective in promoting the explanation of subjects and their discussions in a more interactive and relaxed and therefore motivating patients to actively participate in groups. 63 patients participated in the first meeting, 54 the second, 51 in the third and 56 in the room, showing low number of losses.
