Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Be a participant in the PROCOR program; have medical authorization for physical exercise; having a risk factor for cardiovascular disease; both genders; age above 18 years

Blood pressure - A reduction in blood pressure levels is expected, assessed by means of automatic blood pressure monitoring equipment (OMRON, model HEM-7113, Brazil), with cuffs appropriate to the circumference of the participants' arms. Blood pressure measurements at rest will be performed on three non-consecutive days and on each of the three days, the participants will remain at rest, sitting in a calm environment for 10 minutes, and then, three measurements will be performed. For analysis purposes, the average of all measurements made on each measurement day will be adopted. In addition, blood pressure will be measured before, immediately and 30 minutes after the first and last session of each training mesocycle using the automatic equipment already used for the measurement of rest. The reduction in blood pressure levels will be verified through the comparison between two moments, adopting a significance level of 5%.

Evaluation of the Affective Response to Exercise - An increase in the affective response to exercise is expected, determined from the sensation scale of Hardy and Rejeski, (1989). This instrument consists of an 11-point scale, ranging from +5 ("very good") to -5 ("very bad"). To use this instrument, participants at the end of the first and last session of each mesocycle, will answer the following question: "How pleasant was it for you to perform this exercise session?". The increase in the affective response to the exercise will be verified through the comparison between two moments, adopting a significance level of 5%.;Capillary glycemia - A reduction in capillary glucose levels is expected. Capillary blood glucose collections will be performed before, immediately and 30 minutes after the first and last session of each training mesocycle. These collections will be performed by means of a digital puncture with the aid of a disposable lancet (Accu-Check Safe-T-Pro Uno, Roche, Portugal) and a drop of capillary blood is used to fill a test strip that will be analyzed in a clinical glucometer (Accu-CheckPerforma, Roche, Portugal) that assesses the blood glucose concentration at the time of collection in approximately five seconds. The reduction in capillary blood glucose will be verified by comparing two moments, adopting a significance level of 5%.;Waist and hip circumference - A reduction in waist and hip circumference, obtained through procedures described by Lohman, Roche and Martorell (1988), is expected. All measurements will be made with a Cescorf® tape measure, with an accuracy of 0.1 cm. Measurements will be taken before and after the nine-week period.
