Design outcomes
Primary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| It was expected that after one month of smoking abstinence, there was improvement in mucociliary clearance, as measured by the saccharin transit time test, and reduction in local and systemic inflammatory conditions, measured by inflammatory markers (TNFalfa, IL6, IL8, IL10) in nasal lavage and blood serum.;When the variables behavior after 30 days of smoking abstinence were compared, it was found that abstinent smokers presented improvement of mucociliary clearance and blood serum TNFalfa concentrations. There was no difference in the behavior of inflammatory markers IL6, IL8 and IL10 in nasal lavage and blood serum, as well as TNFalpha in nasal lavage. | — |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| As well as improvement in mucociliary clearance and inflammatory condition of the patients who stopped smoking, it was expected that the concentrations of carbon monoxide in exhaled air (exCO) and in blood (HbCO) also diminished.;exCO and HbCO (carboxyhemoglobin) decreased in abstinent group in relation to current smokers. | — |
