Fibromyalgia

Interventions

Treatment group: 19 women with fibromyalgia will receive treatment with acupuncture for 4 weeks, one session per week lasting 30 minutes each. The points selected based on traditional Chinese medicine

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Women; Age between 20 and 60 years old; Diagnosis of fibromyalgia according to the American College of Rheumatology criteria.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Severe psychiatric illness; With neurological or sensory deficit; Patients who have contraindications to acupuncture; Pregnant women; Lactating; Patients unable to attend the acupuncture sessions; Patients who do not accept the conditions proposed in the term of free and informed consent.

MeasureTime frame
Reduction in pain level determined by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and algometry (Force Dial FDK / FDN Series, Wagner Instruments, Greenwich - USA) before and after treatment. The algometer records the pain in kilograms (kg) borne by the individual in 8 points located, bilaterally, in the suboccipital region, trapezial muscle, second rib and lateral epicondyle

Improvement in Quality of Life determined by the reduction in the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FFI) score before and after intervention;Increased levels of anti-inflammatory interleukins (interleukin-10 (IL-10) and interleukin-4 (IL-4)) and reduced levels of proinflammatory interleukins (interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumor Necrosis Factor -alpha (TNF-alpha)) Measured on a flow cytometer before and after intervention
