Interventions

Participants were randomized into three groups and received the supplements for 4 weeks, described below: a) ß-alanina - ALA (n = 8)
3 daily doses of 1.6g (4.8g / day) of BA. It was adopted a minimum interval of three hours between doses, considering the absorption and kinetics of BA
b) Sodium Bicarbonate - BIC (n = 7): 3 daily doses of 1.6g (4.8g / day) of unflavored maltodextrin in the first 22 days and on the following five days there were two 5 g / day sodium bicarbonate adapt

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The subjects should have presented a weekly training volume between 25 and 40km; and running pace between 4.5 and 5.5 min/km (3,69 and 3,03 m/s) in a 5km run.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Absence in 10% of the training sessions during the study; absence on the assessments; runners that have consumed creatine or BA in the last 3 and 6 months; bicarbonate or caffeine in the last month

Primary

B-alanine and sodium bicarbonate supplementation were able to promote significant increase (both interventions with a 39% improvement) in the total time (in seconds) of the final sprint test. The placebo group did not show a significant increase (12% improvement).

Secondary

Outcome 1 - Urinary anion gap: B-alanine supplementation counteracted exercise-induced metabolic acidosis, as it showed a positive urinary anion gap (mEq / L) after the maximal exhaustion test. On the other hand, supplementation with sodium bicarbonate (-14.9 mEq / L) and placebo (-27.7 mEq / L) were not able to maintain a positive urinary anion gap after the maximum exhaustion test. Outcome 2 - body composition: All three groups (B-alanine, sodium bicarbonate and placebo) presented significant changes in body composition between the pre and post supplementation moments, ranging from 13 to 20% in the fat mass and between 1 to 2% in the lean mass, with no differences between them.
