Interventions

Eligibility

Age
50 Years to 80 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Men and women; Aged 50 to 80 years; medically diagnosed with hypertension; using up to two antihypertensive medications; willing to participate and sign the informed consent forms; office blood pressure between 130-179 and 80-110 mmHg

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Diseases that limit the performance of physical exercises, such as lung disease, valvular heart disease, and renal failure; underlying cardiovascular disease previously diagnosed by a physician, occurring in the last 24 months, such as acute myocardial infarction, angina or stroke, or heart failure; diseases that reduce life expectancy; regular physical activity practitioners (i.e., 3 or more sessions per week of high intensity exercise moderate or vigorous); body mass index greater than 39.9 kg/m²; diabetic proliferative retinopathy

Primary

MeasureTime frame
It’s expected to find decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure during the day, night, and over 24 hours, assessed through ambulatory blood pressure monitoring before and after 12 weeks of intervention.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
It’s expected to find improvement in secondary outcomes, which will be assessed before and after 12 weeks of intervention: Office systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Cardiorespiratory fitness, assessed through a maximal exercise cardiopulmonary exercise test; Endothelial function, assessed through ultrasound; Heart rate variability, assessed through a heart rate monitor with telemetry signal; Neuromuscular function, assessed through handgrip strength and sit-to-stand tests; Level of enjoyment, through a questionnaire; Adherence to interventions, assessed through attendance/absence control at sessions.
