Eligibility

Age
18 Years to No maximum

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Severe nicotine use disorder as per the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (score >6); at least mild craving scores in the Questionnaire of Smoking Urges-Brief (>27); not presently seeking treatment for smoking; at least 18 years old; right handed, completed high school.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Severe substance use disorder as screened by the ASSIST tool; diagnosis or high risk of diagnosis of psychiatric disorder according to screening tools and clinical interview; presently taking bupropione, nortriptiline or varenicline; history of brain lesions; history of epilepsy, neurosurgical procedures or cardiac pace maker; pregnant women or high risk of pregnancy.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Acute cigarette craving measured by a cue reactivity paradigm by means of visual analogue scale scale (behavioral measure), defined as the difference between values attributed by participants to neutral and active cues before and after transcranial magnetic stimulation. Main outcome.;Mean heart rate measured during active and neutral cue reactivity paradigm obtained before and after transcranial magnetic stimulation (acute craving related biological measure).

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Severity of cigarette use disorder in baseline and 7 days follow up measures by the Fagerström Nicotine Addiction Test.;Chronic craving scores in baseline and 7 days follow up measures by the Questionnaire of Smoking Urge - Brief.
