Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Individuals who smoke and wish to quit. Partially edentulous patients who have at least one newly placed dental implant in the oral cavity, in a healed socket. Over 18 years of age. Both sexes

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Completely edentulous patients. Immediate implants in fresh extraction sockets. Need for bone grafting in the implant area. Presence of any systemic alteration considered a risk factor for implant loss or failure (e.g., diabetes, HIV infection, etc.). Severe malocclusion (such as large transverse discrepancy of the jaws, etc.). Chronic use of non-steroidal or steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Use of bisphosphonates. History of radiotherapy in the head and neck region. Severe periodontal disease. Antibiotic therapy (prophylactic or not) in the last 3 months

Evaluate the effect of smoking cessation on peri-implant marginal bone loss, measured with periapical radiographs.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Verify the difference between former smokers and current smokers in terms of probing depth in implants, obtained by performing a complete clinical exam of peri-implant tissues, after 3, 6,12, 24, 60 and 120 months.;Evaluate the occurrence of early implant failure, late implant failure, and incidence of peri-implantitis in smokers and former smokers.;Verify the impact of smoking cessation in oral health-related quality of life. Data was collected using the instrument OHIP-14.;Assess the effect of smoking cessation on saliva and peri-implant fluid on the levels of the following immune-inflammatory mediators after 3, 6, 12, 24, 60, and 120 months: Interferon-gama (INF-g), Interleukin-4 (IL-4), Interleukin-17 (IL-17), Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1b), Interleukin-10 (IL-10), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Interleukin-8 (IL-8), Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-a), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), Osteoprotegerin (OPG), Oxytocin (OC), Osteopontin (OPN), Receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-? ligand (RANKL), Tumor Necrosis Factor-beta (TGF-b), tetrahydrogen triphosphate (CTP), and cotinine;Assess the smoking cessation rate at 12, 24, 60, and 120 months.;Evaluate the effect of smoking cessation on prosthetic outcomes.
