Age
60 Years to 80 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Age between 60 to 80 years old (minimum of 60 and a maximum of 80 yrs);Being residents at the Doutor Thomas Foundation;Being able to walk without or with aid equipment (walking stick or walker);Being able to participate in the functional tests and the intervention program with a frequency of 3 times a week for 12 weeks;

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Having uncontrolled cardiovascular diseases; osteomioarticular dysfunction;endocrine malfunction that prevents them from participating in the assessment tests and the intervention program;Using a wheelchair or being bedridden;Present cognitive impairments indicated by the Mini mental test;

Functional performance Evaluation (SPPB battery) Balance test This test aims to measure static balance (standing without moving the feet) by the following tasks: i) Feet together: the subject must be standing, feet together, side by side; ii) Semi-heel-toe feet: the subject in the standing position, will place the heel of one foot on the big toe of the other foot; iii) Feet in heel-toe position: the subject will stand and place the heel of one foot in contact with the tip of the other foot. Two attempts will be applied to each task with an interval of 30 seconds. The maximum time considered for the test will be 20 seconds. The attempt that obtains the longest time will be recorded. Sit and stand test 5 times The sit and stand test aims to measure muscle strength and endurance of the lower limbs. The participant will start the test while sitting in a chair (seat height: 43 cm) with a straight back, feet flat on the floor and with spacing close to shoulder width, arms crossed in front of the chest, with hips and knees flexed at 90o . The participant must perform 5 repetitions from the sitting position to the standing position and return to the starting position within the shortest time. Walking speed in 4 meters: The participant will start the test sitting on a backrest chair and 43 cm high, feet fully supported under a rigid surface. At the signal of the evaluator, the participant will be instructed to get up and move along a 4 m path to a cone, go around it, at his usual speed and return to the exit point, sitting again. Two attempts will be applied with a minimum interval of 30s, the shortest time will be recorded Risk of falls: Recent Falls: The following question will be asked - In the past year, have you had two or more falls OR a fall that required medical attention? Gait Speed Assessment at 6 meters: The participant will start the test sitting on a backrest chair and 43 cm high, feet fully supported under a rigid surface. At the signal of the evaluator, the participant will be instructed to get up and move along a 6 m path to a cone, turn around the cone at his usual speed and return to the starting point and sit again. Two attempts will be performed with a minimum interval of 30s between repetitions, the shortest time will be recorded. Walking speed in 10 meters: This instrument aims to assess temporal and spatial gait parameters. To eliminate the acceleration and deceleration component, participants are asked to walk 14 m at usual speed, the initial and final 2 meters are not included in the analysis Cognitive functions The Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) questionnaire will be applied, which is divided into two sections. The first section contains items that assess orientation, memory and attention, totaling 21 points. The second section measures the ability to repeat, to obey a verbal command and a written one, to write freely a sentence and to copy a complex drawing (polygons), making nine points. The total score is 30 points based on dichotomous items. The cut-off points 23/24 are used as suggesting of cognitive deficit. ;Handgrip strength assessment Handgrip strength test - An analogue handheld dynamometer will be used to assess the isometric strength of the hand and forearm muscles (grip strength) and will be normalized by the participant's body mass in kilograms (handgrip strength / body mass). The participant will be seated, elbows positioned at the side and flexed to 90 degrees, wrist in neutral position. At the signal of the evaluator, the participant will have to tighten the dynamometer as hard as possible for at least 5 seconds. The participant must perform three attempts in each hand alternately (considering an interval of 30 seconds between each attempt), the best performance among the three attempt
