Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Workers aged 18 years or older; of both sexes and different genders; who reported daily tobacco consumption for at least one year and who voluntarily agreed to participate in the study by providing written informed consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria comprised concurrent participation in another smoking cessation treatment; pregnancy; participants who entered medical leave or vacation during the study period and individuals with a diagnosis of asthma or severe allergic rhinitis

Expected outcome 1: A reduction in nicotine dependence was expected, assessed using the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence, based on comparison of scores obtained in the pre- and post-intervention periods. Changes in nicotine dependence were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test for between-group comparisons. A significance level of 5% and a 95% confidence interval were adopted for all analyses;Observed outcome 1: When the sample was stratified according to the primary outcome, the Angelica archangelica group (A2000) presented a baseline mean score of 5.38 (standard deviation ±1.93) on the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence, which decreased to 4.08 (standard deviation ±2.46) after the intervention, with a statistically significant difference (p=0.027). Similarly, the Piper nigrum group (A2700) showed a baseline mean score of 4.31 (standard deviation ±2.46), which decreased to 2.69 (standard deviation ±2.57) in the post-intervention assessment, also demonstrating a statistically significant difference (p=0.02). No statistically significant differences were observed between groups regarding baseline and final Fagerström scores (p>0.151). In addition, a reduction in Fagerström scores was observed at the end of the intervention period in both groups, with the median decreasing from 5 to 2.5 in the Piper nigrum group and from 6 to 3 in the Angelica archangelica group. Intragroup comparisons indicated a trend toward reduced nicotine dependence following the intervention

Changes in tobacco consumption over the course of the study were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test for between-group comparisons. A significance level of 5% and a 95% confidence interval were adopted for all analyses;Outcome found 2: A decrease in smoking load was observed in both groups after the essential oil intervention. At baseline, the Angelica archangelica group presented a median smoking load of 17.40 pack-years, classified as moderate smokers, whereas the Piper nigrum group presented a median of 10 pack-years, classified as light smokers. After the intervention, the median smoking load decreased to 10.5 pack-years in the Angelica archangelica group and to 5.47 pack-years in the Piper nigrum group, with statistically significant intragroup reductions in both groups (p<0.05). No statistically significant difference was observed between groups regarding final smoking load values (p=0.219)
