Eligibility
Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Older adults aged 60 years or older; both sexes; referred by the Open University for Older Adults of the State University of Rio de Janeiro; presenting good clinical health status; ability to perform activities of daily living independently; eligible for participation in physical exercise after pre-exercise screening
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Presence of uncontrolled cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, musculoskeletal, or metabolic diseases that contraindicate physical exercise; musculoskeletal limitations that prevent safe execution of the proposed exercises; use of medications or clinical conditions that pose risk during physical exercise; cognitive impairment that prevents understanding and execution of study procedures; concurrent participation in a structured physical training program
Design outcomes
Primary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| An improvement in functional fitness in older adults is expected after the intervention, assessed by a battery of functional tests encompassing lower and upper limb strength and endurance, flexibility, dynamic balance and agility, as well as functional aerobic capacity, with comparisons performed between pre-intervention and post-intervention moments | — |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| An improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness assessed by a cardiopulmonary exercise test performed on a cycle ergometer with direct measurement of ventilatory and metabolic variables is expected; an increase in maximal muscle strength assessed by one repetition maximum tests for upper and lower limb exercises; an improvement in muscle power assessed by mechanical variables obtained during the execution of resistance exercises; favorable changes in body composition assessed by body densitometry; improvement in submaximal cardiorespiratory variables obtained during the cardiopulmonary exercise test and improved cognitive performance (executive functions/attention) assessed by the Stroop test, with comparisons performed between pre-intervention and post-intervention moments | — |
