Eligibility

Age
30 Years to 65 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients aged 30 to 65 years; both sexes; acute Achilles tendon rupture; diagnosis confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging; rupture located between 2 and 6 cm from the calcaneal insertion; surgical treatment through an open technique using Bunnell suture associated with the modified Kessler technique; agreement to participate in the study by signing the Informed Consent Form

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Claustrophobia preventing permanence inside the hyperbaric chamber or performance of magnetic resonance imaging; absolute or relative contraindication to hyperbaric oxygen therapy; open injuries; Achilles tendon rerupture; previous surgical treatment of the Achilles tendon; need for tendon transfer to reinforce the tendon

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy are expected to show thinner Achilles tendons, improved tendon tissue quality, and less peritendinous edema in magnetic resonance imaging after 3 and 12 months post-operatively compared to the control group

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
It is expected that patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy will show a higher functional score on the Achilles tendon total rupture score (ATRS) compared to controls 6 and 12 months post-operatively
