Interventions

Control group: 25 participants registered with the Basic Health Unit with Family Health Strategy allocated to this group
enhanced usual care consisting of training of Family Health Teams to improve the recognition and management of depression. The research group does not interfere in any way with the treatment offered t
weekly supervision of CHWs and NAs
home sessions: home sessions, performed by CHWs or NAs, with support of an application specially developed for this Program and installed in tablets
17-weeks duration with eight or 11 home visits depending on the severity of the depressive symptoms evaluated in the third session
each visit lasting approximately one hour.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Individuals aged 60 years and over, enrolled in two Basic Health Units with Family Health Strategy in the municipality of São Paulo; depression assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (score 10 or more no PHQ-9).

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Complete deafness; terminal illness; risk of suicide; or an inability to communicate (e.g., due to cognitive impairment either reported by a family member or detected by the researcher).
