Oxygen Consumption

Interventions

This is a three-arm, open-label (non-masked) randomized controlled clinical trial. Forty male volunteers aged 18 to 30 years will be recruited. Participants will be randomly allocated into three group
group 2 (G2, n=13), undergoing 10-minute audio-guided mindfulness (MF) sessions without a formal MF training program
group 3 (G3, n=14), receiving daily MF exercises plus an MF training program with a qualified instructor, who will guide participants and prescribe weekly practices. The randomization process will be

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Men; aged 18 to 30 years; a minimum of six months of regular physical activity prior to the study; previous experience in treadmill running; free from any disease or physical limitation; cleared for physical activity by the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q); no prior experience with Mindfulness practices or the Brief Mindfulness Meditation (BMM); provided written informed consent

Exclusion criteria: Noncompletion of any study phase; development of any health condition precluding safe continuation; voluntary withdrawal

Expected outcome 1: To assess the effectiveness of Mindfulness on maximal oxygen consumption (V?O2max) and on the velocity associated with maximal oxygen consumption (vV?O2max) during an exercise test;Outcome found 1: A significant reduction in these variables was observed in the Mindfulness condition compared to the control condition, verified by means of an incremental treadmill exercise test, based on the following values: absolute V?O2max (control: 3.7 ± 0.6 L·min?¹ vs. Mindfulness: 3.6 ± 0.5 L·min?¹; p = 0.013; d = 0.734); relative V?O2max (control: 50.6 ± 4.7 ml·kg?¹·min?¹ vs. Mindfulness: 49.9 ± 4.9 ml·kg?¹·min?¹; p = 0.017; d = 0.702); vV?O2max (control: 13.9 ± 1.4 km·h?¹ vs. Mindfulness: 13.6 ± 1.5 km·h?¹; p = 0.017; d = 0.697); and velocity at 80% of vV?O2max (control: 11.1 ± 1.1 km·h?¹ vs. Mindfulness: 10.9 ± 1.2 km·h?¹; p = 0.017; d = 0.696)

Expected outcome 2: To assess the effectiveness of Mindfulness on ventilatory threshold 1 (VT1), ventilatory threshold 2 (VT2), time in 5km, and intensity at 25% of VT2;Outcome found 2: The planned secondary outcomes (ventilatory thresholds VT1 and VT2, time to cover 5km, and intensity corresponding to 25% of the difference between VT2 and vVO2max) could not be obtained due to equipment failure of the gas analysis system during data collection. Consequently, the aerobic performance tests (5km and fixed intensity) were also not performed, as they depended on the prior determination of the ventilatory thresholds
