Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Men; aged between 18 and 55 years; classified as sedentary to regularly active according to the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ)

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Cardiopulmonary and/or neurological disorders; physical disabilities; infectious dermatological conditions; use of continuous medications (anticoagulants, beta-blockers, bronchodilators, and/or anabolic-androgenic steroids); unwillingness or inability to undergo the study procedures

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
It is expected to find a 20% difference in oxygen consumption between the aquatic treadmill and land treadmill assessments, as measured by a metabolic analysis system containing a gas analyzer. Both absolute values and values normalized per kilogram of body weight will be analyzed

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
It is expected to find a difference in heart rate between the aquatic treadmill and land treadmill assessments, as measured by a heart rate monitor. The absolute value in beats per minute will be analyzed;It is expected to find a difference in peripheral oxygen saturation between the aquatic treadmill and land treadmill assessments, as measured by a pulse oximeter. The percentage saturation value will be analyzed at the participants’ index finger;It is expected to find a difference in systolic blood pressure between the aquatic treadmill and land treadmill assessments, as measured using a sphygmomanometer and stethoscope. The absolute value in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) will be analyzed;It is expected to find a difference in diastolic blood pressure between the aquatic treadmill and land treadmill assessments, as measured using a sphygmomanometer and stethoscope. The absolute value in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) will be analyzed;It is expected to find a difference in perceived physical and respiratory exertion between the aquatic treadmill and land treadmill assessments, as measured by the Modified Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion and Dyspnea Scale. The absolute value will be analyzed;It is expected to find a difference in blood lactate concentration between the aquatic treadmill and land treadmill assessments, as measured by capillary blood sampling from each participant’s index finger. Absolute lactate concentration values will be analyzed, expressed in millimoles per liter (mmol/L);It is expected to find a difference in metabolic equivalents (MET) between the aquatic treadmill and land treadmill assessments, as measured by a metabolic analysis system with a gas analyzer. Absolute MET values will be analyzed;It is expected to find a difference in respiratory quotient (RQ) between the aquatic treadmill and land treadmill assessments, as measured by a metabolic analysis system with a gas analyzer.
