Interventions

This is a longitudinal, observational cohort study including 2,025 children, with four follow-up waves using phase-specific instruments to identify risk and protective factors for child development. B
application of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) to identify maternal depression
collection of umbilical cord blood for genetic analyses. Follow-up at 6 months of age: administration of a socioeconomic questionnaire
child development screening instruments, including the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, Third Edition (ASQ-3-BR), and the Survey of Well-Being of Young Children (SWYC)
assessment of maternal mental health using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9)
assessment of parenting practices using the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS)
actigraphy measures
and video recordings of mother–infant interactions. Follow-up at 18 months of age: application of all instruments used in the previous wave
inclusion of an assessment of the maternal psychosocial context using the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) and Experiences of Discrimination (EOD) questionnaires
assessment of child development using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (Bayley-III)
collection of saliva samples for epigenetic analyses. Follow-up at 36 months of age: administration of a socioeconomic questionnaire
the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, Third Edition (ASQ-3-BR), and the Survey of Well-Being of Young Children (SWYC)
and collection of neurological data using electroencephalography

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
It is expected that the children in the sample will have their level of developmental progress observed and that this will be related to risk and protective factors. The children will be followed from birth to 36 months of age. Throughout the follow-up waves, developmental assessment instruments will be used (Ages and Stages Questionnaire, 3rd edition, Brazilian version, ASQ-3-BR; Survey of Well-being of Young Children, SWYC-BR; Bayley Scales of Infant Development III, Bayley III)

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
No secondary outcomes are expected
