Eligibility

Age
60 Years to No maximum

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Individuals with medial knee osteoarthritis, determined by the classification of Kellgren and Lawrence (1957) in grades 1 to 3 on the panoramic radiograph; deformity in varus of up to 10 degrees in the measurement of the anatomic / mechanical axis; individuals of both genders; age range of 60 to 75 years; individuals who did not have the surgical procedure as the first treatment option; absence of another type of associated disease affecting the lower limbs; absence of muscular, nervous sequelae and / or previous fractures in the lower limbs; absence of neurological disorder that promotes cognitive alterations; not have used bracing prior to the study; individuals who accepted to use the orthosis as a form of treatment.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Inability to perform any of the tests; individuals who did not use the orthosis due to skin lesions; individuals who did not attend the returns for the evaluations.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
30% improvement in WOMAC index (quality of life in individuals with knee osteoarthritis), was verified by filling the WOMAC scale in a specific form by the patient. Data collected at the time of pre-use of the orthosis and after 2 months of use of the orthosis in the individuals of the orthosis group. In the control group the data were collected in 2 moments: initial and after 2 months.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Pain improvement in individuals with medial osteoarthritis of the knee with varus deformity after placement of the orthosis immediately and after 2 months of use. Using EVA questionnaires. Data collected at the time of pre-use of the orthosis and after 2 months of use of the orthosis in the individuals of the orthosis group. In the control group the data were collected in 2 moments: initial and after 2 months.;To evaluate the opening of the joint space by radiographic control after placement of the orthosis, using panoramic radiography of the lower limbs, the measurements were performed by 2 orthopedist specialists in knee for comparison. Radiographs were taken before the knee was placed and immediately after placement. This procedure was performed only in the individuals of the Orthosis Group.;Improvement of gait pattern. Kinetic evaluation of gait using force platform to capture ground reaction forces. Test conducted in Laboratory of Movement Studies using force platform. Data collected at the moment of pre-use of the orthosis, immediately after the orthosis placement and after 2 months of use of the orthosis in the individuals of the orthosis Group. In the control group the data were collected in 2 moments: initial and after 2 months;Increased muscle strength. Muscle strength test performed with isokinetic dynamometer for evaluation of flexor torque peak and knee extensor. Exam performed at the time of pre-use of the orthosis and after 2 months of use of the orthosis in the individuals of the orthosis Group. In the control group, the tests were performed in 2 moments: initial and after 2 months.;Improvement of static balance. Balance evaluation performed with force platform to evaluate the reaction forces to the ground and pressure center. Exam performed at the time of pre-use of the orthosis and after 2 months of use of the orthosis in the individuals of the orthosis Group. In the control group, the tests were performed in 2 moments: initial and after 2 months.
