Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Age 18 years and over; bilateral severe and / or deep sensorineural hearing loss; hearing loss of postlingual origin; limited benefit with the use of hearing aids (sentence recognition threshold below 50% in the best ear with amplification); first cochlear implant surgery; absence of anatomical contraindications; fluency in Portuguese (Brazil), including reading and writing; signature of the Informed Consent Form.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Partial insertion of the electrodes in the cochlea (more than four electrodes out of the cochlea); patients who were in a closed set (ie, could not have any speech recognition without visual cues) at the time of the speech tests.
