47 Years to 80 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Healthy volunteers; postmenopausal; aged between 47 and 80 years; non-smokers or drinkers; non-vegetarians; well-trained in strength training

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Volunteers with musculoskeletal, thromboembolic, and gastrointestinal diseases; a history of cardiovascular or infectious diseases; or the presence of varicose veins in the legs

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
To assess changes in muscle hypertrophy induced by manipulating training volume and including blood flow restriction; hypertrophy of the vastus lateralis muscle will be evaluated by ultrasound over the 9 months of intervention; a small effect size of 0.3 increase in muscle hypertrophy is expected

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
To assess the effect of increased strength training volume and blood flow restriction on muscle strength, evaluated by the one-repetition maximum test on the leg extension and leg press 45° machines at the beginning, during, and at the end of the study; a large effect size of 0.8 in muscle strength increase is expected
