Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Be at least 18 years old; have participated in at least one regional or national-level trail run competition; perform running training at least three times per week, with at least one session on uphill terrain, for a minimum of 12 months prior to the beginning of the study

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Use of medications that could potentially interfere with the study results; smokers; participants with a history of injury in the last 6 months

Outcome expected 1: It was expected that the speed associated with the second lactate threshold and the speed associated with the breakpoint of the variables derived from near-infrared spectroscopy would not be statistically different in the speed-based incremental test, as well as the values of oxygen uptake and the percentage of maximal oxygen uptake between these variables for this test;Outcome found1: It was found that the speed (6.0%), oxygen uptake (6.5%) and percentage of maximal oxygen uptake (7.2%) associated with the breakpoint of the variables derived from near-infrared spectroscopy was significantly higher compared to values associated with the breakpoint of the variables derived from near-infrared spectroscopy in the speed-based incremental test;Outcome expected 2: It was expected that the slope associated with the second lactate threshold would be statistically lower than the slope associated with the breakpoint of the variables derived from near-infrared spectroscopy in the slope-based incremental test, as well as the values of oxygen uptake and the percentage of maximal oxygen uptake between these variables for this test;Outcome found 2: It was found that there was no significant difference between second lactate threshold and the breakpoint of the variables derived from near-infrared spectroscopy related to incline, oxygen uptake and percentage of maximal oxygen uptake in the slope-based incremental test ;Outcome expected 3: It was expected that the values of oxygen uptake and the percentage of maximal oxygen uptake at the first and second lactate thresholds between the speed- and slope-based incremental tests would not be statistically different;Outcome found 3: It was found that the oxygen uptake associated to first (-8.7%) and second (-5.3%) lactate threshold was lower in the speed-based incremental test compared to slope-based incremental test, as well as to the percentage of maximal oxygen uptake associated to first (-8.3%) and second (-4.3%) l
