Eligibility

Age
50 Years to 75 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Male and female participants; age between 50 and 75 years; symptomatic knee osteoarthritis for at least 3 months; pain score greater than 3 on the 0–10 Numeric Rating Scale (NRS); Kellgren–Lawrence classification greater than grade 1

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: History of cancer; patients with type I diabetes; with uncontrolled arterial hypertension; with cardiac pacemaker; presenting neurological deficits; with orthopedic surgery in the lower limbs; with body mass index above 40 kg/m²; with symptomatic hip osteoarthritis; presenting cognitive impairment; with history of brain surgery; seizure; stroke or intracranial metal implantation; who underwent craniectomy at the site of transcranial direct current stimulation application; and decompensated ventricular shunt

Primary

MeasureTime frame
A variation in pain intensity is expected, measured by the Numerical Rating Scale (0 to 10), with a significant reduction in pain levels anticipated between pre- and post-intervention assessments

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
A decrease in functional limitation is expected, measured by the Lequesne Index (0 to 24 points), with a significant reduction in functional limitation levels anticipated between pre- and post-intervention assessments;An improvement in functional mobility is expected, assessed by the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, considering that shorter execution times indicate better performance. A significant reduction in test completion time is anticipated when comparing pre- and post-intervention measurements;A decrease in the physical activity score (0 to 68) is expected, measured using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC), when comparing pre- and post-intervention results, considering that higher scores indicate lower levels of physical activity;An increase in muscle strength of the knee extensors and flexors is expected, assessed using a handheld dynamometer, when comparing pre- and post-intervention values, considering that higher values indicate improved muscle strength;An improvement in postural balance is expected, assessed using the Biodex Balance System (BBS), when comparing pre- and post-intervention values, considering that lower sway values indicate better postural control
