Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Females were included between the 7th and 20th postoperative days of mastectomy or quadrantectomy associated with axillary lymphadenectomy at levels I, II and III of Berg; who were regularly followed up at the services proposed for the study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The exclusion criteria were: to present lymphedema in the homolateral upper limb before and/or after surgery, open wounds and presence of infection at the surgery site, presence of drains and/or probes, as well as clinical pathologies in activity, such as heart failure, visual impairment, and faecal or urinary incontinence. Also excluded were women with orthopedic changes in the shoulder joint, such as impact syndrome and rotator cuff tendinopathy. Exclusion criteria related to breast cancer included metastatic disease, sentinel lymph node biopsy, immediate post-mastectomy breast reconstruction, and peitoral muscle resection.

Shoulder movement angulations, verified from a computerized evaluation, compared to the movements of the shoulder against the side.;The angulations were verified according to the previously described methodology, and compared to the opposite shoulder. There was evaluation before and after therapy, with observation of increased angulation for flexion, abduction, adduction and external rotation of the shoulder. At the end of the proposed treatment, there was a statistically significant increase in angulation with respect to the movements of adduction, abduction, flexion and external rotation of the shoulder on the ipsilateral side, with an improvement of 12.4 degrees, 52.6 degrees, 45.5 degrees and 26.4 degrees, respectively. On the other hand, no improvement in ROM was found at the end of treatment insofar as extension of the ipsilateral limb was concerned (p=0.156) or with respect to the movement of internal rotation of the shoulder (p=0.480).
