This prospective cohort study involves a sample of 500 patients with a history of severe asthma attacks treated at urgent and emergency care units in the city of Salvador. We aimed to investigate indi
consultation with a specialist doctor, including a prescription for drug treatment available in SUS (when clinically indicated)
nursing consultation involving standardised guidelines for guided self-management of asthma
an action plan for early treatment of asthma attacks

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Attendance at public emergency service in the City of Salvador due to an asthma attack 15 days before; Age greater than or equal to 12 years, without distinction of sex; Live in the city of Salvador, Bahia

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Pregnant women at the time of inclusion; Patients with impaired understanding and verbal communication; Be participating or have participated in a clinical trial; Diagnosis of comorbidities that make it difficult to assess asthma: other respiratory diseases, history of cerebrovascular accident (CVA), neurological disease, congestive heart failure (CHF), myopathies, psychiatric diseases and advanced neoplasia; History of smoking greater than or equal to 10 packs per year; No landline or mobile phone.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Assess for recurrence of a severe asthma attack (binary outcome). The data will be evaluated quarterly through telephone interviews (2 to 4). Frequencies and measures of central tendency will present data.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Assess time to recurrence of severe asthma attack, number of severe asthma attacks in 12 months, asthma control, access to health services, adequate use of inhalation devices, frequency of hospitalisations and visits to emergency units, and treatment adherence. The method used to measure the outcomes will be the application of standardised questionnaires through quarterly telephone contacts (a total of 2 to 4 contacts). Results will be presented as absolute and relative frequencies and measures of central tendency.
