Age
18 Years to 70 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Individuals with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis in the Nephrology Department of the Hospital for at least three months of hemodialysis; of both sexes; between 18 and 70 years old; in stable clinical conditions

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients who will undergo kidney transplantation during the intervention period; who are unable to understand and follow the research protocols; people in wheelchairs; who have medical contraindications to performing physical and/or breathing exercises; those who do not agree to sign the free and informed consent form

Expected outcome 1: improvement in functional capacity, verified by an increase in the distance covered in the 6-minute walk test after 8 weeks of respiratory muscle training associated with physiotherapy based on functional exercises;Finding outcome 1: no statistically significant improvement in functional capacity was observed. The control group showed an increase in the distance covered in the 6-minute walk test from 360±39.2 meters to 381.9 meters, while the intervention group showed a reduction from 345.3 to 310.8 meters, with no statistically significant difference between the groups (p=0.17)

Expected outcome 2: improvement in balance and mobility, verified through the timed up and go test; increased inspiratory muscle strength, verified through the manovacuometry test; and improved quality of life, verified through the Kidney Disease and Quality of Life Short Form instrument after 8 weeks of respiratory muscle training associated with physiotherapy based on functional exercises;Finding outcome 2: there was an improvement in balance and mobility in the control group, evidenced by a reduction in the timed up and go test time, with a statistically significant difference (p=0.04), while the intervention group showed a reduction without statistical significance (p=0.39). Regarding respiratory muscle strength, both maximum inspiratory pressure and maximum expiratory pressure increased in both groups, but without a statistically significant difference. In the control group, maximum inspiratory pressure increased from 69.5 (95% confidence interval: 41–98) to 81 (61–99), with p=0.09, and in the intervention group from 70 (24–115) to 78.7 (34–120), with p=0.06. Maximum expiratory pressure in the control group ranged from 99.5 (57–152) to 104.5 (55–158), with p=0.67, and in the intervention group from 94.4 (51–138) to 104.4 (73–139), with p=0.24. No results regarding quality of life were presented
